OVERVIEW:  An artificially protected harbour, partially built on reclaimed land. Chennai, formerly known as Madras, is one of the largest ports in India and handles most types of cargo including passengers, Ro-Ro, dry and liquid bulk, containers and breakbulk cargo The three main port areas are Dr. Ambedkar Dock, Jawahar Dock and Bharathi Dock.
