OVERVIEW:
The principal port in Northern Queensland, serving a large area including the mining
community of Mount Isa and the Greenvale nickel refinery. The main imports are petroleum
products, nickel ore, cement and vehicles. The port specialises in the export of raw
sugar, copper and zinc concentrates, metals, fertiliser, molasses, cattle and frozen
beef. Townsville is also a port of call for cruise vessels and warships.
LOCATION:
On Cleveland Bay on the east coast of Queensland, 280 km. SSE of Cairns and 1,110
km. NW of Brisbane.
