OVERVIEW:
The Suez Canal is a sea level canal with variable water levels. The tide is 0.65 m
in the north and up to 1.9 m. in the south. On both sides of the canal there are mooring
bollards every 125 m. for mooring vessels in case of emergency, and kilometric sign
posts helping locate the position of ships in the waterway.
The Suez Canal has undergone major work with the construction of a new canal from
km. 60 to km. 95, in addition to deepening and widening of the Great Bitter Lakes
by-pass and Ballah by-pass, total length of 37 km. (Great Bitter Lakes by-pass length
27 km., Ballah by-pass length 10 km.). Total length of the project is 72 km. This
has enabled a transit time of 18 to 11 hours for the southbound convoy, with waiting
time for vessels reduced…
