OVERVIEW:  Modern port covering some 17 n.m. of coastline around the city of Shimonoseki. Comprises several port areas (Nishiyama, Arata, Fukuura, Main Port, East Port and Chofu), an oil terminal on the island of Mutsure, and Choshu Dejima, an artificial reclaimed island. The port handles dry and liquid bulk, Ro-Ro, passengers, containers and breakbulk cargoes.
LOCATION:  In Yamaguchi Prefecture in the SW corner of Honshu. The city also encompasses the island of Hikoshima which is separated from Honshu by a narrow creek. Shimonseki bounds the northern side of Kanmon-kaikyo (Kanmon Strait), which connects the Inland Sea with the Sea of Japan.
