OVERVIEW:
75 km. (40 n.m.) canal linking the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Locks raise and lower
vessels approx. 26 m. in the course of a canal transit and dictate the present beam
restriction. The Panama Canal Expansion Project aims to double the current capacity
by constructing larger locks at both ends of the Canal. For complete and current Panama
Canal regulations, Masters, owners and operators should consult the Canal website.
Particular attention should be paid to the required documents and the pre-arrival
procedure.
The newest locks came online in June 2016.
Note:
Effective 28 June 2024, the maximum authorised draft for vessels transiting the Neopanamax
Locks will be 14.33 m. (47.0 ft.) and, effective 11 July 2024, the maximum authorised
draft will be 14.63 m. (48.0 ft.).
